Embarking on a PhD journey is often romanticised as an intellectually stimulating adventure, where passionate scholars delve into the depths of their chosen field, making discoveries along the way. While this may be true to some extent, the reality is far more nuanced. Doctoral studies can be arduous, lonely, and mentally taxing. Yet, there's a prevailing stigma surrounding discussing one's struggles outside the immediate circle. In this blog, I'll try to show you the importance of embracing the value of sharing your PhD struggles with a smaller or broader community that you can connect with along the way.

Acknowledge the Challenges

The path to a PhD is fraught with challenges that extend beyond the academic realm. From feelings of isolation to mental health concerns and work-life balance issues, doctoral students navigate a myriad of hurdles throughout their journey. However, the mainstream culture often discourages open discussions about these struggles, fostering a sense of shame or inadequacy among students who dare to speak up.

Mental health and well-being

Mental health concerns are alarmingly prevalent among graduate students, yet they remain shrouded in silence. In an environment where you feel comfortable to discuss struggles openly, we can begin to break down the stigma surrounding mental health in academia, and also access the much-needed support and resources.

Build a supportive community around you

Navigating the challenges of a PhD journey alone can be overwhelming. Embracing a culture of openness and vulnerability, you can cultivate a supportive community of peers who understand and empathise with your experiences. Sharing struggles allows you to gain diverse perspectives, practical advice, and emotional support from individuals who may have faced similar challenges, or simply have a different perspective.

Foster Resilience and Growth

Discussing struggles openly can alleviates the burden of isolation, but also promotes resilience and personal growth. By confronting challenges head-on and seeking support from your newly found support community, you can develop coping mechanisms, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of yourself. Every setback becomes an opportunity for learning and self-improvement, ultimately contributing to a more fulfilling and rewarding PhD experience.

Empower Future Generations

By normalising discussions around PhD struggles, we pave the way for future generations of students to embrace vulnerability and seek support without fear of judgment or stigma. By sharing our experiences openly, we empower others to do the same, creating a culture of openness, empathy, and support.

The importance of talking about PhD struggles cannot be overstated. Together, we should challenge the status quo and create a culture where every struggle is met with empathy and understanding. And remember to celebrate every accomplishment, no matter how small it may seem, they are the milestones that bolster you during challenging times!
